As tough and hardy as its name implies, the Cast Iron Plant is so easily grown that even those with a brown thumb can still produce a beautiful plant for their garden. Sturdy, long-lasting and capable of growth where many other plants fail, this slow-growing perennial can handle total shade, which makes it great to plant around decks or along the foundation of your home where sunlight may be minimal. With a maximum size of approximately 3 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide, this fuss-free, lush looking evergreen plant is incredibly versatile and will fit in a wide variety of areas where you may want to use it. Fill in those hard to cover areas of your yard filled with shade only easily when you plant one or more of these beautiful, unique plants to cover unsightly, bare areas.

Questions & Answers

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • Can this plant survive a New Jersey winter?

Cast Iron plants (Aspidistra elatior) are not ideal for outdoor planting in New Jersey due to the colder winters. They are hardy in USDA Zones 7-11, and New Jersey can fall into Zones 6 or colder, where temperatures often drop below what Cast Iron plants can tolerate. If you want to keep it outdoors, it’s best to grow it in containers that can be moved indoors during the winter months. Otherwise, Cast Iron plants do much better as indoor houseplants in colder regions.
