Description

Reaching heights that make it more tree-like than a shrub, the Nellie R. Stevens Holly evergreen shrub will quickly grow to 15-20 feet tall and 10 feet wide when planted in full to partial sun and watered regularly. An incredible, natural screen when you plant several of these shrubs next to each other in a row, featuring lovely little white flowers in the Spring and bold red/orange ornamental berries produced if a male Chinese Holly shrub is planted nearby, in the cooler months, the Nellie R. Stevens Holly shrub is a gorgeous addition to your garden or yard all year long. The branches are so dense on this stunning Holly shrub that using it to add a barrier between your home, or yard, and the neighbors is just a few handsome plants away. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to care for, so once you establish the root structure in the first year it basically cares for itself.

Shipping & Returns

Shipping:

Shipping live plants sometimes has its challenges when dealing with inclement weather but we strive to have every single order shipped out on their scheduled shipping date. Most orders will be scheduled to ship within 1-2 weeks of ordering. Because a plant needs TLC we only ship out on Mondays-Wednesdays to ensure the plants aren’t stationed somewhere over the weekend with no water or sunlight.

When to Ship:

We can ship out plants at anytime of the year pruned or not pruned, cold or not cold. Each plant’s durabilty is different so we recommend having them shipped in their designated season but we will still ship your plant to you earlier if you choose so.

Returns:

Because plants are perishable they cannot be returned without prior permission. We work hard to ensure all plants arrive healthy, but on rare occasions issues with the plant health upon delivery do arise.

Every single shipped plant is healthy upon departing our facility but if a plant is received in poor health contact us immediately so that we can assess the problem and work on saving the plant. We will first need a photo of the plant to start a claim. If we determine your plant cannot be recovered we will send you a replacement immediately. If notified of the plants health within 4 days we will send a replacement 100% free of charge.

If you determine the plant not to be healthy 4 days after delivery you can contact us and we will issue a 50% store credit.

30 days after delivery we cannot be held responsible for the current health of the plant.

Ask a Question
  • Do they produce berries without a male pollinator?

Yes, Nellie R. Stevens holly can produce some berries without a male, but a male holly nearby increases berry production significantly.

  • Hello! I will be buying 24 Nellie Hollies and maybe some other plants + 1 year fertilizer for each tree. Is there a bulk rate I can get to help offset the costs of so many items? Also, how tall is a 1 gallon pot vs 3 gallon pot? Is 5 feet between each tree enough space to create a privacy hedge in the coming years? And when is the ideal time to plant them? Would they flourish if I planted them late July? Ideally, I would like to make the purchases this week. Thank you in advance! :)

5 feet apart is perfect for a dense privacy hedge.
Best planting time: Fall or early spring.
Late July planting: Possible with lots of water but not ideal (heat stress risk).

  • Are they suitable for zone 6? How wide do they grow each year?

Yes, they are hardy in zones 6–9. They typically grow 1–2 feet in width per year under good conditions.

Nellie Stevens is taller and denser; Needlepoint has narrower, more graceful leaves.

  • Which shipping company do you use?

    UPS

  • When will my order arrive?

  • How tall are the 7 gallon bucket Hollie’s when delivered

on average, they are about 22 inches tall and 18 inches wide.

  • How fast do the Nellie R. Steven’s holly grow in a year’s time?

Nellie R. Stevens holly grows 2 to 3 feet per year under optimal conditions.

  • Hi, Would it be possible to grow a nellie stevens holly and then keep it at no greater than 5 feet tall? I love the holly but dont need it to be 20 feet tall. Would it die if i tried to keep it pruned at no greater than 5 feet tall?

Yes, you can keep a Nellie Stevens holly pruned to 5 feet tall. Regular pruning, ideally in late winter or early spring, will help maintain its shape and size. As long as you prune properly and don’t remove too much at once, the plant will stay healthy and thrive.
