A floral double threat that features not only clusters of rich, pink flowers but also beautiful burgundy foliage, with blooms that appear heaviest in the Spring and taper off thereafter through the season. A gorgeous choice to place in your borders, flower beds, planted around your foundation or in a large container on your porch or patio, simply keep your Loropetalum in full to partial sun and watered regularly to keep the top three inches of soil wet to allow it to reach its full potential of 4-6 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide. The Loropetalum evergreen shrub is bird friendly, is incredibly easy to take care of and is absolutely stunning in color year-round regardless of whether the blooms are present or not. From the deeply dramatic color of the foliage to its amazingly simple care, your yard is calling for the color and fragrance of the Loropetalum.

Ask a Question
  • Hi, I purchased the Loropetalum, the 12.99 version and I would like to know how far apart I should plant them so they form sort of a hedge. I have a lot of bushes to get as I am planting them around the foundation of my home but I started with 10 and then I will get more until they are all around. Are they fast growing? I read that the Purple diamond Loropetalum can be spaced pretty far away from the next one, more than 4 ft, but I read something else in another place and the one that I purchased which I thought was the Diamond, doesn't say> Thanks for any help you can give me, Carol Weber

    1. Spacing:

      • Plant them 4-6 feet apart for a dense hedge, depending on the variety and their mature size. For smaller varieties like Purple Diamond, use 4-foot spacing. For larger varieties, space them 5-6 feet apart.
    2. Growth Rate:

      • Loropetalum is moderately fast-growing, adding 1-2 feet of growth per year when properly cared for.
    3. Planting Tips:

      • Ensure they are in well-drained soil and get full sun to partial shade.
      • Water consistently until established, then they are drought-tolerant.

For a uniform hedge, plan out the spacing and size of the varieties you choose. Gradual additions will work well!

  • Is it safe for dogs

Yes, most varieties of Loropetalum, including the popular Purple Diamond and other species, are generally considered safe for dogs. They are not listed as toxic by the ASPCA, making them a pet-friendly choice for your garden. However, it’s always a good idea to monitor your pets, as consuming any plant in large quantities can lead to digestive discomfort. If you’re ever concerned about your pet’s health, contact your veterinarian for advice.

  • how hardy? what zones?

Yes, Loropetalums are considered hardy shrubs and thrive in USDA Zones 7 to 10. They are well-suited for areas with mild winters and can handle a variety of growing conditions, including full sun to partial shade. Loropetalums are known for their vibrant foliage, such as purple or red leaves, and striking pink fringe-like blooms. To ensure they thrive, plant them in well-draining soil and water regularly during dry spells. While they can tolerate some cold, protection may be needed in areas with harsher winters.

  • Hello, We are looking to add either (4) of the regular Loropetalum or (4) of the Purple Diamond Loropetalum as privacy accents to our half-circle drive in Aiken, SC. We were wondering what the differences in the id2 types were as far as color, growing speed, expected mature height & width. Plenty of room side to side to accommodate a wide spread. Thanks Much! Todd & Angee

Here’s a comparison of regular Loropetalum vs. Purple Diamond Loropetalum:

    1. Color:

      • Regular Loropetalum: Typically dark green leaves with pink or white flowers.
      • Purple Diamond: Vibrant purple foliage with bright pink flowers.
    2. Growth Speed:

      • Regular Loropetalum: Grows moderately fast.
      • Purple Diamond: Slower-growing compared to regular varieties.
    3. Mature Height & Width:

      • Regular Loropetalum: Can reach 8-15 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide.
      • Purple Diamond: More compact, maturing at 4-5 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide.

For your half-circle drive, if you want a bold accent and a compact plant, Purple Diamond is ideal. If you want taller, more natural screening, go with the regular Loropetalum.

Nice plant, arrived quickly

I was skeptical about buying shrubs online- even hardy ones like Loropetalums- but since these were the right size and price point I decided to give it a go.

Glad I did. Nice healthy plants, arrived quickly. I watered them, planted them. They're doing great! (We've put them into a planting in the walkway next to our church building here in western Florida.)
